Ignition lock failure; Can't turn past "0"...help!

I hope you all can advise me a bit; very sorry if this was answered any where before; I did a search and could not find this particular case...
I have a year 2000 V70XC, and the ingition lock has broken down in some manner which has the lock stuck in the "0" position. No way to move it to "1"...can't even get the key all the way in. So I have gone ahead and bought a used ignition lock assembly, and drilled out the security bolts and partly removed the lock cylinder assembly...but I am stuck unable to remove the interlock cable...because I can't turn the key to "1".
Any suggestions to how I can remove that interlock cable without destroying it? Should I cut it in half as you did? Or is there an easier way?

When I first read the headline of your post, I automaticly assumed that your shift lock button, the one you normally push to take out out of park was sticking. But, after reading your entire post, I'm not sure that is the problem, or what the problem might be. But, I would still double check the shift button by grabbing it with your thumb and finger and try to pop it out when you are in park. I had just the opposite, key wouldn't go from I to 0 unless that button is all the way out. It's a common problem. Look at IPDusa.com for the solution. Good luck. R/ Allen

Thanks for taking a shot at it, Allen, but in this case it's not the shift-lock. In fact, we recently replaced the shift-know mechanism that breaks down...but this time it's the internals of the actual keyway that have broken down; and I suspect there are broken parts inside...my wife mentioned that she saw a smalll piece of metal sticking out of the keyway, when she shoved it back in with the key, all the troubles began...and now we have a situation where the many anti-theft devices on our trusty volvo are making repairs a real chore. I suspect I am going to end up completely demo-ing the lock assembly just in order to replace it.
