Another thought on this...You said there was a hissing noise and the smell of burning clutch...Was this A/C serviced recently?...If it was over-charged the belt, or the clutch, or both will slip due to very high compressor head pressure...If that is the case the A/C can be disabled electrically and the compressor will become just an idler pulley...The oil could be refrigeration oil which would leak out if the compressor seals or head gasket blew, but it does not neccessarily mean the idle function of the compressor is lost...On the other hand, if the compressor clutch bearing is siezed, the clutch cannot be dis-engaged and the compressor will continue to run...Then the belt fix is the only option...

Must have blew a seal as we now have no charge on the system.
Pulley is a little noisy but is working for now.
I may try to bypass with belt from crank to PS.
