Usually the power stage (resistor) dies as a result of the blower drawing too much current. Replacing the power stage and leaving the blower might goes the new power stage to die as well. You may want to lubricate the bearings or replace the blower as a precaution.

I see that you can buy the blower motor without the cage (fan blades). Is there some way to remove the cage from the old motor?

Serves me right for not reading this entire thread: you prop the cage on wood blocks and drive the shaft through it with a punch.

I just bought a new blower fan for my 96 850 turbo wagon from one of the companies who advertise at the top of this page. It looks fine, but the mount plate, near one of the 4 screw holes, has had a .25" x 2" section ground away from the plastic.
Any idea why this was done?

Cheers.

Why not fuse the line between the blower motor and the power stage? Maybe one of you electro-techs could suggest the best way and amperage for doing this.

Thanks for the information... I have a 1997 850 GLT and have already replaced the resister once because "the boys" didn't want to listen to me about replacing the screeching fan the first time I found your blog!! So here I am again with ANOTHER BLOWN RESISTOR!! Rest assure I will be replacing the fan this time and am gonna research how to replace the resistor myself as well!!
Thanks again

Thanks for the writeup. I had fault code 418 from B1 "No control signal to blower fan power stage". My blower speed has been acting up for several months and finally would not come on. I replaced the blower resistor and now the blower works again. AUT still does not work, but that is fine with me. Thanks for the pics as I was having a hard time finding the resistor pack as it is hidden in the ducting.

Thank you all for the excellent information, again.

I love my 1997 850 Sedan.

I replaced the blower motor in my manually controlled heat and A/C system about 2 years ago (using MVS of course). I thought it turned with a little resistance to begin with, but all has been well. Recently I lost the 1 thru 3 fan speeds. The fuse is good. I took the fan motor out, cleaned and oiled it. I replaced the thermal fuse on the resistor, but it didn't solve the problem. I had trouble soldering the fuse in and may have over heated it.

The questions are: Is there any way to verify that the resistor unit is bad for sure?
Can it be any other problem?
I have read about people pulling codes, is it done as when the check engine light is on?
Is it good advice to go ahead and replace the blower motor resistor?

Side notes - I recently replaced my oil trap with MVS tutorials. It went perfectly, and solved the usual problems. Thanks all again, I'm going to make a donation right now.
