I have an S40 with a heater that works intermitently. On cool mornings if I start the car then turn it off immediately, the heater will work on the restart. I have a check engine light, which may or may not be related; when I had diagnostics run the code indicated that there was a thermostat issue.
I am just wondering if anyone can give me a direction in which to look for a solution.
Heater Works Intermitently

If you have a faulty thermostat this will affect the heater. If it is stuck open the coolant will not reach operating temperature. If it is stuck closed the engine may overheat but the coolant won't circulate to the heater.
