V40 dash lights flicker, AC/heat don't work

Post by olddaddy »

When we start our 2000 V40 the lights for the cabin heat and AC flash on and off, but the fan won't come on and there is no heat or AC control. I've checked the fuses, but they are all intact unless there is an inline somewhere. I'm at a loss on this one.

The Electronic Climate Control (ECC) module can detect faults in the system and store Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). If a fault is present the system informs the driver by flashing the AC Off indicator light for 20 seconds.

Unfortunately the DTCs have to be read using a scan tool and not all of the generic scan tools can read the DTCs in this system. If you have an auto-electrician near you he may have the equipment to read the codes. My local man has. If not, it means a trip to the dealer.

Well, you were right about the scanner, it didn't see anything at my local Autozone store. The odd thing is that the lights flicker, but the entire fan/cooling/heating system will not come on at all. The parts guy suggested my freon levels might be too low for the system to operate, but that sounds crazy to me since it worked one day fine and not the next. Any other advice other than the dreaded and unaffordable trip to the dealer?

If the freon level is low it will stop just like that. It reaches a certain point and the system switches off to protect itself. There is no harm in having the level checked and topped up if necessary.
