I found the tb cleaning, new fuel pump relay, along with replacing several rubber elbows throughout the vacum lines to have fixed my stalling problem. When pulling the throttle body out I noticed several cracked elbows including the two connected to the tb. My car seems to have more umffff now, it's been a week since making these repairs.

I have stalled while driving on the freeway at 65 mph and on in-town, sometimes late at night. I have changed fuel pump and relay and still no change. Quite costly. I am thinking about selling the car, but have moral qualms about giving my problem to anothe person.

Can I add "me too" to the list. I've had the engine cut out problem for nearly two years and have put up with it. With the rear seats down and cover off the fuel pump, I've been able to hear the pump stop seconds before the car stalls (at any speed). I've changed the pump, with no success, and am equally unhappy with the idea of selling or even giving the car away because the fault is so dangerous, I'm worried someone may gey killed. Going to try the relay next.
Given that so many people have experienced this problem, why isn't there a press outcry or some pressure on Volvo to come clean? They must be aware of it as an issue..

Murphy's Law right? Sounds like the relay(s) may be your problem, but of course, the more expensive attempt didn't fix it. That's why I try to work from least to greatest expense. So relays first, then pump, etc., unless you changed the pump first because it was more accessible? Also, if it stalls while moving, consider checking/replacing the CPS.mikej wrote:Can I add "me too" to the list. I've had the engine cut out problem for nearly two years and have put up with it. Look in Jman's post for an answer to your questions:sibir wrote:Where is the infamous fuel pump relay located?
Is it harder to change than the pump?
What is the part number of the relay?
I consider changing it as a first stab.

Thank you, Matt for the immediate reply.
FCP Groton sells the red, main relay for $50, but then there is another, secondary relay for half the money. Was everybody always talking about the red one under the fuse box?
And, btw, my main relay is greenand has the number 9434138 written on it.

The reason I changed the pump first was because it first cut out 3 years ago. The only way to get home was for my son to keep bashing the pump whenever it quit. Definately pump failure- worn brushgear most likely. So I just assumed it was pump again. Didn't bother me too much because I expected it to cut out and just drove carefully. But now I want to sell the car so it becomes an issue.mikej wrote:Can I add "me too" to the list. I've had the engine cut out problem for nearly two years and have put up with it. The relay I have inspected was within the fuse box, green in colour and has the number 103 stamped on it in black ink. The contacts were slightly bent. I've straightened and cleaned them, although no sign of soot or arcing. And had no trouble since. It was cutting out about 3 times every journey. I'm a (lazy) electronics engineer, and I can't account for why there was always a 30 sec (and getting longer) delay before a restart. Bent contacts alone would not account for a delay, and there would be evidence of arcing if the contacts were overheating.

I'd just like to add that I wish I'd seen jmans post about starting issues, although I was not having problems with starting, just cutting out on the run.. ( the pump only cost me

I've found a good general description of the fuel system used on some Volvo's, including some diagrams and trouble shooting help.
follow this link http://www.icbm.org/erkson/ttt/engine/f ... d-jet.html
it won't help everyone, but it gives a good description of how the system works.
