Hello all
While driving with my kids over the holiday in our 2000 V70 (older body style, 128,000 miles) and over 100 miles away from home my check engine light went on. The car drove well, without any problems. The next day the check engine light went off, and we subsequently returned home without problems.

The OBD reader returned codes of p0350 and p0351, indicating a potential problem with the ignition (p0350) and ignition circuit A (p0351).

How shall I pursue this further? Does ignition circuit A refer to the first cylinder? How are the cylinders numbered? What diagnostic steps should I take?

Of note I previously got about 420 miles a tankful, but starting approximately 10,000 miles ago the mileage per tankful has worsened, to less than 400 per tankful. I put in new plugs and filters 8,000 miles ago and the mileage per tankful did not improve. At 92,000 miles the catalytic converter gave out and was replaced, which resulted in improved efficiency. Could this reduced efficiency be attributed to aging of the catalytic converter, or is this suspected to be from aging of the car in general?

If you read this far and can take more punishment then how about adding this question: over the last 15,000 mile the engine has been burning a quart of oil every 1,000 miles. I therefore moved to 20/50 wt oil (Royal Purple) and now I only need to put in a quart every 2,000 miles. Anything to do regarding the oil consumption, and is running the thicker oil a reasonable thing to do, or should I use the thinner oil and replace more frequently?

Could it be the reduction in MPG is with loaded car on a trip? Just my thoughts because we went through this recently but had a carrier on the top, etc. and mileage suffered greatly compared to before. The thicker oil is probably a decent idea. You might want to do a compression test if you're really concerned as you might have some wear (with age) in your cylinders but could also be related to your ignition issues. However, I would be hard pressed to think that oil usage would be from that alone unless this code has been coming up for a long time and from your read, it hasn't.

The ignition issue from your error codes is as follows:
DTC P0350 Ignition Coil Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction
DTC P0351 Ignition Coil 1 Control Circuit
I would think that one code is setting the other so fixing the coil issue would clear up both codes. So, yes, I believe you're on the right track I would look at the ignition coil for that #1 cylinder...btw, the numbers are 1-2-3-4-5 from the passenger's side over towards the center of the car...they are all in order if that makes sense.

How would I go about this? I would switch coil packs around and see if the fault code shows up for a different place (cylinder). This is the simple way. Let's see what others who have done this on their cars will kick in their opinions as well. If anything like our '04 V70 there are 3 coil packs. 1&2 cylinders are on coil pack #1...3&4 cylinders are on coil pack 2 and cylinder 5 is on it's own, so the logical thing to do is switch the places of coil pack 1&2 and if you come up with code for Coil 3 or 4 (DTC P0353 Ignition Coil 3 Control Circuit or DTC P0354 Ignition Coil 4 Control Circuit) then you know you need to replace that faulty coil pack.

If your car has individual coils and not coil packs (not sure even after looking in VADIS about this), then your process of elimination should be even easier than the above.

This morning I had the quick plan to do as suggested- swap out the coils for the 1 and 2 cylinders; did it in a few minutes, however the car now does not want to start. The starter turns but the cylinders wont fire.

I replaced the coils as they were originally, and still a no start. I checked all fuses- none were blown.

The wires going to the coils all appear intact, no burn sites, however their integrity must be checked with an ohmeter, which I currently do not have access to.

Do you think if the coil went bad the car would not start; any advice from here?

I sent you an email (reply to yours) but I'm stumped. Could be a number of things including the immobilizer in the key ignition switch...could also be the battery...maybe it went low from many previous start attempts? Or, maybe gas related? Are you getting spark at all?

After a prolonged period of running the starter and with the aid of cables the car started. I am surprised the battery did not have enough reserve to start the car. Perhaps I am in need of a new battery? I am grateful for your quick replys and advice. I will update if the Check Engine light comes on.

Well, could be but usually the first thing that goes on these cars when the battery gets low is its ability to start (even if all other lights work). Keep an eye on it...if it's the original battery it may be time, like you said. At least in my case I've never had a battery go belly up during the warmer months...it always seems to be in the dead of winter.

Btw, I won't be able to post as spontaneously as I've been doing these last couple of weeks after tonight. I've been on winter break from my work in the schools and that all comes to an end tomorrow morning. However, as always I'll be back on after about 4:30 everyday (EST) :P

Coming home from work today, I received the following codes:

P0350 Ignition Coil Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction
P0351 Ignition Coil A Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction
P0352 Ignition Coil B Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction
P0353 Ignition Coil C Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction
P0354 Ignition Coil D Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction
P0355 Ignition Coil E Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction

The car ran fine but the codes would not reset (kept coming back) with the ODB II reader. I recently changed the timing belt, tensioner, serpintine, tenstion, plugs, fluids..... I backtracked the maintenance and found that two of the coil wires were pinched between the head and the plastic coil/plug cover (the one with Volvo on it). I taped up the pinched wires and attempted to clear the codes again. The car started and no codes. Do not know if this will help anyone else but I knoew that all the coils could not go out at once and the car would still pur like a kitten.

I had the code stating that ignition coil ABCDE throwing codes and it ended up being the hose from the turbo was disconnected in the back I put a video on YouTube look up S60 Volvo ignition coil fix
