No. 1 Piston

Post by chazcoral »

I have rebuilt my head. It is engine # B6294S, 2000 S80 non turbo with 6mm valves.
I am trying to set timing. I removed the starter and placed the cylinder stop in the hole. When I do that the timeing marks almost line up, which my understanding is correct because it is not supposed to be completely at TDC. However the piston that I thought was number 1 ( 1st from timing belt) is at bottom as is the last piston with the lock in it. The two middle pistons are at the top. Is that right? Which Piston is number one?

You are correct, cylinder #1 is the cylinder nearest the belts. My understanding is that the piston stop should be in this cylinder.

The only cylinder that has a hole for the stop is behind the starer on the last one. I'm very confused the instruction are conflicting. I guess that I need to do it without the stop?

The correct way to insert the stop is to first set the crankshaft timing mark on the timing belt sprocket on the mark that is on the oil pump...Then rotate the shaft clockwise a few degrees...Inset the stop tool and rotate the crankshaft counter clockwise until the cylinder #5 counterweight strikes the stop tool...Now piston #1 is in the correct position for setting the cams and timing belt correctly...

So I 'm feeling for a strike from the crankshaft, rather than piston itself?

If I understand this process correctly the piston won't be locked in place. Correct?

I followed those instructions. It places the 1 piston about half way down in the cylinder, and piston 3 and 4 are about 5/16 down. does that sound right?
