Timing belt installation... Help plz

Post by Japedo »

Hello there everyone, im in the midst of changing the timimg belt on my 2001 cross country. "176 miles"

Yesterday I removed the old belt, installed a new water pump, tensioner pulley, and idler pulley. I also loosened up the plastic shield around the crank pulley so I could slip the old belt off, and get a new one on without removing the harmonic ballancer.
When i lined the timing marks up on the cams and crank I noticed the exhaust cam is advanced one tooth!!!! And the old tensioner was as loose as it could get! So im hopeing when I get it back together my P0014 timing over advanced bank B will be gone. Have had that code since buying the car 3 years ago. BUt anyways i'm just rambiling here i'll get on with my question.

Is there a trick to getting the new belt on? I am following the vadis instructions on installing the belt, but once I have it over the water pump there isn't enough slack to pull it over the tensioner. The new belt has the same volvo part number that the one I took off had, so i know that it should fit in theory. Ive changed motors and transmissions before but this is my first timing belt so im just taking it slowly, however im not sure what im doing wrong or missing at this point.

Maybe I need to remove the harmonic balancer so I can have a little better access to the tensioner? If thats the case i wish I would have taken it off before removing the old belt.

Any info or advice is hugely appreciated, im at work now but will be back at the car tomorrow and need to get the old wagon rolling again.

thanks Curtis

forgot to mention that I have the tensioner center screw loose, and slacked off to it's fullest with the allen key.

Make sure that you have all of the cogs in the belt in the slots on the crankshaft gear. It's hard to see and if you are doing this by yourself you may have missed seeing this. That should give you enough slack to slip the belt on.
I didn't remove the harmonic balancer when I did mine.

Thanks for the responce, im glad you got yours done without removing the harmonic balancer. The info on crank pulley and it's engagement with the belt is great information. Im going to start there once I get back to the car.

another quick question, do most people squeeze a torque wrench in there to tighten the water pump when replacing the water pump? I just tightened my new water pump up with a 1/4" ratchet in a criss cross tightening pattern.

thank.s

You must have some directions to do this? If not there is a recomended install path for installing the timing belt.
Around the crank, then the idler pulley, then intake sprocket, then exhaust sprocket, water pump and last the belt tensioner.
Crisscross on the waterpump is correct, the torque is only 12.5 ft-lbs, not that much.
On small bolts like those I don't use a torque wrench (I have all 3 sizes), been wrenching for so long you know by feel when it's correct. You should be fine with a 1/4" ratchet.
I did my V70 last Dec, the wife's S60 will be due for one in 10K miles.

I did have some instructions, from vadis. I was aware of the order to install the belt but thanks for posting that again, likely help someone who passes by this thread someday.
I have two sizes of torque wrenches but like you I never use them on small stuff.

Im not just replacing the timing stuff right now, also have new axles for the front to install and new control arm bushings that have allready been pressed in. Once I get the belt on i'll be off to the races.
Thanks again Jim you had the info I was looking for

What did you use to press out the bushings, I need to replace one in the S60. Haven't got around to it yet.

I did mine yesterday and posted a comment on one of the install procedures. I Loosened the tensioner bolt until the tensioner could disengage from the keeper this will allow the tensioner to loosen significantly more than using the built in adjustment. Once I got the belt on all the pulleys and checked the marks I then rotated the tesnioner and slid it back towards the block to reengage it with the keeper adjusted the tensioner cinched it down checked the marks again and then rotated the engine two times and then rechecked the timing marks and readjusted the tensioner. Car is running just like it did before the change.

jim- I actually had a good friend install them for me, he owed me a favor from last month when I leant him my utility trailor. He works at a local GM dealer and the owner is really cool about letting the guys use the garage for their own purposes on the weekends. So he pressed them in today with some sort of hydraulic press, i wasn't actually there to watch but he said it went smoothly. A press is something I would like to have in my garage, but it wouldn't get used much and would take up valuable space.

raymansean- THat is a great little bit of info there, I can picture in my head waht you are saying. The tensioner holds itself on that little notch thingy, so your just keeping out of the notch and rotating it counterclockwise to get the belt started....

thanks fella's, I can't wait to get done work and get back to the wagon. Youve helped me a great deal with your suggestions

Belt went on quite easily this morning. Seems it was not engaging properly with the crank gear, like jimlev said.

The engine is running smoothly, and the water pump isn't leaking so im very happy. Shouldn't have to worry about the belt for a while.

thanks again guys for your help.
