Volvo S80 1999 problems

Post by alexmeares »

Hi there.
Just bought a Volvo S80 1999. it has some things that need fixing,
Most importantly is the idling. car is perfect while miving, but when you stop it sometimes idles up and down, it sounds crappy and it even stalled once. I think it may be the oxygen sensor. Also seen many articles about the electronics throttle, but I thought It properly isn't that considering car is fine on open road. (any ideas?)
Another thing is the passenger door lock must be loose of its roller thing, while unlocking makes a dreadful noise. Another proplem I had was the first day I had it, was using cruise control and it said "brake failure, stop safely ASAP". which natural scares the shit out of you. Anyway turns out I need to change brake fluid and was causing the message, however after that came on it said "engine (or electronic, I can't remember) system service ugent" Please anyone with knowlage please get back to me. Just wondering whether everything is going to cost me much etc. Suspension bush also needs replacing, but thats fine.

thanks. please reply.

For the idle problem, it could be the ETM. Read this thread for information on that and other stalling issues:

But there are simpler things you should check first like spark plugs, battery charge and terminals.

I have 1999 S80 T6 that had same issue a few years back and it was fixed by dealer by replacing Air Mass Meter.

I have a 99 2.0 turbo. the problem with the oscillating idling speed started 3 years ago. And the car was in and out from the dealer several times before they found what the problem was. The motorized air trottle unit was cleaned and the car was like new. Now after 2 years the problem started again. I get some new gaskets and a new breather filter from the crankshaft ventilation.
And started dismantled the manifold in my own garage, cleaned the trottle from soot and debris. Changed the crank shaft breather filter this was completely clogged (155000 KM). After reasembling and start upo the car is like new. ( May be better).

There is a service bulliten about the idle bouncing up and down. I have an S70 and S80. I have had the throttle plate cleaned per the service bulliten and it solved the problem. The dealer wanted to replace the ECM to the tune of $1000+.

From what I can tell most of the people who work on Volvos, at least where I live, are down right dishonest and often incompetent.
