2004 S60 AWD 2.5T - ATF Question

Post by neworleans »

Hello everyone,

I just bought this car and it needs some maintenance.
It has got 79500 miles on it and ATF color is pretty dark and needs to be flushed.
I did change the ATF on my S80 and used Dexron 3 but not sure what type of ATF this S60 gets.

Thanks for your time in advance...

Mobil 1 JWS 3309 (has to be ordered), 3309 spec fluid from the dealer (usually expensive), or Toyota T-IV ATF (cheap and readily available at your nearest Toyota dealer). To my knowledge you cannot or should not substitute any other fluid for any of the 3 mentioned above. For your reading enjoyment there are about a bazillion threads regarding this topic, some here and many on other Volvo forums as well.

I'd like to compare the prices, can you tell me where to order the Mobil 1 JWS 3309 from?
There is a Toyota Dealer right next to my place, I will ask them today.

Any preference between the two? or pretty much the same?

Thank you..

The link below is the only place I know to get the Mobil 1 fluid, probably other places as well but I haven't looked. The Toyota fluid should be between $4 and $6/per quart. By the time you factor in shipping it usually is the cheapest route. To my knowledge there is no difference between any of the 3 fluids mentioned, all meet the same spec. I've been using the Toyota fluid in our cars for the past 3-4 years and haven't had any trouble. Your next dilemma will be deciding whether to drain and fill or flush via the trans. cooler hose at the radiator. I like the flush but many, especially on higher mileage vehicles like the drain and fill. Many topics out there on this subject as well.

I got the TP-IV Toyota ATF today ($5.48 a qrt) to change the fluid but the bolt was huge, couldn't' take it off.
Do you know what size of wrench do I need to drain the transmission fluid??

Thank you.

Make sure you refill through the dipstick hole.

Hey Guys,

I finally found the 15/16 wrench and did change the ATF today. Thankfully volvo made this so easy. When I drained my S80 I had a very hard time, when I pulled the filter, the pipe section where goes in to the tranny broke and I sweated my ass off to take off that small piece, so I didn't have to deal with all that on this car.

I drained it 3 times, when you drain it, 3.5 qrts drain. I attempted to flush it through the Radiator hose after the first drain but damn hose didn't come off. So I had to drain it 2 more times (bought 12qrst Toyota TP-IV ATF), drive it little bit and get on the ramps and drain it again. It took me about 2.5 hours.

Thank you all very much for your help, I will be around with more questions :)
