Timing Belt Tools

Post by randyman »

Replacing timing belt, water pump and other parts on my 2002 S60 AWD 2.4 turbo. I need to know what the cam lockdown tools are and a part number and place to order them from. I tried ZDMAC and IPD but no luck without a part number. HELP!

Called them, $600 only full kit sold for many models. He thought the peice parts could be had on E-bay, but I am not certain what or how many to look for.

You don't need special tools, that's what the timing marks are for. Align the marks at the beginning.
A good mirror helps when working on top to check the cam marks.
Read all the good info around here!

I am awaiting the CD with the detailed info and will attempt to do. In the meantime I will continue to research this forum for any tips. I was an "A" tech for many years and have also done this on a number of Audi's, but this sounds like it may be a bit trickier the first time around by what I have read.

Volvospeed has some good info. This is what I used when I first got my car.
Pictures are everything, and the words help too.
http://volvospeed.com/Repair/timingbelt.php this the early engines.
http://www.volvoxc.com/resources/how-to ... ement2.pdf this is the later engines.
There is one difference, the cam marks are at 12:00 on our later models.
Take your time, the hard part would be the water pump.

You don't REALLY need special tools, but IPD's P/N T850CT cam lock is handy because the cams have a tendency to seek the low point on the lobes once you remove the belt...It might move off the mark without you spotting it as you try to put the new belt on...Then you have to remove the belt and start over...

I just bought a universal cam lock tool on Amazon for $35. It looks like it will work well on this car and others!

:D I finshed this afternoon with my new timing belt, roller, tensioner, water pump and oil change. 4.5 hrs. later. I ran into one problem, with the intake cam and crankshaft aligned, the exhaust cam was not close to alignment. The car ran well and got good gas milage, so I made my own mark instead. I did notice that the 3 bolts holding the spocket to the cam go through slotted holes. It was rotated to the very end of the slots? Well I moved on and got it completed and it ran well! Noticed the torsion motor/tranny mount was shot and the serpentine belt tensioner pulley was a little too wobbly so I ordered those parts for next week. :o The old belt was VERY LOOSE on all sides. The tensioner was fully out. I can't believe it didn't let go on me......I have 120,000 on the car, so I took the last mild weekend in Buffalo to hit this before the bitter winter arrives. BOY am I glad I didn't leave this for spring! :D

Funny, my mechanic just did this with my wife's '04 V70- didn't use any cam lock tool and the lobes didn't move- he said that was pretty rare, actually but he's done hundreds of these- all said, it took him about 45 mins to finish the jobs (didn't do the water pump- it wasn't leaking- so hopefully we won't have to get back in there anytime soon).
