Is it possible to just simply disconnect the ABS system or take a fuse out? I need to have mine rebuilt but in the meantime it is driving me nuts.
Thanks,
Ry
Can I disconnect my ABS?

If your lights are already on, they're going to stay on whether you pull the fuse or not. The lights won't go away until you get the module fixed.

I would pull the fuse, pull the ABS module, bag the big electrical connector to the ABS and bag the bottom of the master cylinder where the ABS module bolts into, to keep any dirt, etc out, and send that ABS module off. Car brakes fine, just old school. Live with the lights long enough to get the module fixed and put back in, and be done. It's the only was I know of get those lights to turn off. I used Module Master and I was happy with the service, but Matty Moo has gotten great reviews and looks to be cheaper.

Well maybe I'll pull it tomorrow.
Actually last night after I'd posted this I looked at the "fix" in the database. I'm very well versed in electronics and the use of soldering irons/pens so I very well may be able to do it myself. Also, I'm about as poor as you can be without being impoverished. Even 60 dollars for me is a lot of money I don't have. Now solder and a few tools...I already have.
I guess the reason I wanted it "off" is because it keeps turning on. not only do the lights flicker but sometimes when I brake it comes on when it shouldn't be coming on. AAAAAAnnoying.
Thanks.
Ryan

Ryan,
If you can solder you can do the job. Get a good hot iron (at least 45 Watt) to go after the terminals that go to the modulator pump. A 25 watt iron is fine for the smaller terminal connections.
The loss of the module really isn't that big of a deal if you learned to drive in the days before ABS - we learned to pump the brakes to keep the wheels from locking up. Locked up wheels are like trying to turn a Jet Ski with no power, you can turn the wheel (handlebars) all you want but the vehicle is not going to change direction very much.
In many ways - to my mind - ABS is a pain since once it starts buzzing it changes my pedal feel. That and the buzzing distracts me and takes away my normal (instinctive) reaction that I would have used on my '69 AMX back in the day to keep from slamming into the guy in front of me.
If you don't feel up to the job Matty Moo is a stand up guy and he will take care of you.

The repair is very easy, you just need to have a little 20ish watt pencil for the small leads and a bigger (150ish watt) gun for the larger power pins.
Hard part is getting it out...I managed to get an angle on the bolts by using a 1/4" wrench around something like this:

If you have a teensy tiny 1/4" ratchet that might work as well but I didn't and I don't think you would have too much room. This adapter works because the closed end of the wrench is at an angle which brings the end of the wrench closer and gives a bit of clearance. Fortunately the bolts only need to be broken loose and then they spin out... well mine at least!

You have a 96. They have the shitty wiring harness between the module and the pump where the insulation likes to flake off the wires.
Since you have flickering lights, check that first. IF it's bad, wrap some wire tape around each wire individually.

Well, they aren't flickering persay, but they go on and off very sort of randomly while I'm driving. There's no rhyme or reason to it. Thanks for the heads up, I'll check it out tomorrow.Matty Moo wrote:You have a 96.
