96 850 positive battery cables question

Post by williamregan »

I've replaced my battery twice in the past 3 years due to it repeatedly going dead and having to be recharged so I decided to replace my positive battery cables. I'm going to get the B positive cable that goes to the fuse box from the dealer but I got this battery to starter cable:
http://www.fcpgroton.com/product-exec/p ... To+Starter

There is an additional thin cable that is screwed on to the top of the battery post connector and runs down inside the outer black cover of starter cable wire but this thin wire is not included with the replacement starter cable. What is the function of this wire? Should I replace it and does it come with the B+ cable or is it a separate part number?

Thanks,

Bill

Bill,

Have you found any battery better than another?

I replaced my battery under warranty with Sears. Seems ok. Disregard the previous post.

Perform a voltage drop test and then you will be 100% sure which cable you need to replace.

In my case...i needed to replace b+ cable which goes from positive battery terminal to starter.

OK, since I already bought the positive battery to starter cable I want to install it and then see what happens. The starter end of the cable seems to be inaccessible. What stuff should I remove to get to it? I don't want to tear out more than is necessary.

Thanks,

Bill

Just the fan shroud should do it. There are 2 bolts at the top holding it to the radiator/frame of the car, and then a bunch of plugs which are easy enough to sort out when you need to re-install it.

I had a mechanic install the cable for me. My car seemed fine for awhile but then I had the same issue with the car not starting. I used a tester light and removed fuses one at a time to try to find out if I had a battery drain. I discovered the locking system was draining the battery so I left the fuse out and was ok again but then the same old no-start problem reoccurred. Took the car to my mechanic again and he diagnosed that the positive battery cable connector on the replacement cable was defective. He installed a new connector on the cable and my dead battery/non-start issue was solved. After a couple of months of trouble free driving I decided to reinstall the fuse for the central locking system. Sue enough, after a few days to non-start bugaboo returned. I took the fuse back out and was fine until the card died a year later. There probably was never anything wrong with my original battery cable.
