It's all worth it in the end when you have improved initial start oil pressure and thus notice a much quieter motor.

Thanks alot! I agree, it's not that bad of a job. It could be worse.

Yeah that's awesome isn't it. I chickened out on this job, but I remember how I felt after my epic 3 month rebuild this summer. Reminded me of the scene in one of the Star Wars movies when little Anakin Skywalker gets his Pod Racer to fire up and he yells "It's working!".ecbsykes wrote:The feeling is indescribable when you fire up the car for the first time after some work!
Hey man, which kind of Lubro Moly are you using, the Top Tec or the High Tech? And where do you get it? I PM'd you about it already. Thanks.

I am putting in a junkyard engine. Pulled to oil pan and there is a lot of sludge in there.
What is the best way to clean sludge from the bottom end of the engine? The engine is on a hoist. I am assuming I should also pull and clean the oil pump pickup itself, the part with the pickup screen that stays in the block when you remove the oil pan.

you can use
B-12 chemtool liquid or carb spray - I like B-12
You can use diesel or gasoline but it as not as safe.

I used SB-12 with good results, as well as Simple green. Simple Green works very well, but just make sure to not leave anything soaking in it, as it can start to corrode the aluminum.

Thanks for the quick responses. I think I might go with the B-12 for the lower engine block then, so I don't need to hassle about cleaning out every drop of the Simple Green. The block is not so easy as the oil pan, the pan I can do in a separate tub.

Keep in mind if the sludge is thick you should consider having the junkyard get you a different motor. The last thing you want is a worn out junkyard motor due to bad oiling/sludge. You may want to check your tolerances before putting it in the car.

ecbsykes - quick question (or anyone...
)
Did you use two jacks in total? One jack (with a 2x4) to lift up the oil pan/engine initially, and then another jack ("hand jack") to lift a different part of the engine/engine mount?
Also, that is a "telescoping" hand jack, correct?
Just wanna know if I'll need to borrow an additional jack if I do this this summer.
What a great write up! And thanks for taking the time to give great details with pictures.
Edit: Shoot, meant to ask: About jack height, especially where the car is already up fairly high (on ramps - rather than Jack Stands) how are you able to use a jack effectively. Mine seems to near max out just jacking up the car to get under it and have a look
I have a canadian tire jack and axel stand kit.
What is the max lift height on yours? Is it safe to set the jack itself on some 2x4's or something? What would you suggest?

My oil pan is different than yours. Mine does NOT have the oil cooler. I looks a bit different, just wondering how many seals I should be replacing? I have only seen 2 o rings. I thought they would be more than that. I can't figure out how to upload a picture.
But I found my problem. The screen in my oil pickup was completely clogged. And I mean CLOGGED I soaked the heck out of it, scrubbed and blew it out with compressed air. Looks great now
