New switch, no start.

I know...talk about an annoying problem. This is why I daily drove a 1965 Corvair for 4-5 years...when it broke I knew how to fix it...

I have a 91 Camry with 160k miles as a backup car. it's worth nothing, but it has never failed to start and run.

Anyone know where the alarm relay is actually located on the car?

Open that file, and scroll down to page 4. It is the big 2-space relay on the 2nd row up of the relay panel under your dashboard, labeled "O".

hey Thanks. near as I can tell, that relay is dead. it is the only component I can see that I'm bypassing by sending positive voltage from the battery to the service connector.

and of COURSE it has to be an 85 dollar part. :rolls eyes:

Meh. Don't pay good money for a new one. Volvo sells a bypass relay, or you can get one from a junk car or someone parting one out on the site here or in the for sale section of Volvospeed. Look around, see what you can find.

Remove the relay and your (existing) jumper wire and try that^^^

went outside to start the car this morning and my battery was dead.... :facepalm:

I hate the most that it all happened at once: ignition switch finally kicked the bucket, my battery finally died enough that it won't hold a decent charge, and ontop of it, my alarm relay shyte the bed.

All the week I have no money and only 12 days til I'm scheduled to take a 1500 mile trip (well, at least 720 one way)

Okay. This won't make sense.

I pulled the Alarm Relay out and jumpered it. no change.

Out of frustration I decided to take the ignition switch back out and see if the old one would make the car start.

It did.

So I put the new one on. It ALSO made the car start.

put it back in and tried the key and....

nothing.

So final synopsis?

Somehow the tumbler is ALMOST but not quite making it far enough to make the contacts touch. I can feel the spring in the ignition switch though, so it's getting REALLY close but maybe just not quite there.

in the meantime, my button is working nicely. LOL
