S80 sputtering, won't accelerate

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

S80 sputtering, won't accelerate

Post by hypersomnia »

Yesterday, I also had the problem, I had an S80, 2.9L, 100K milage. The engine began to shake when I was waiting the traffic light, then I can not accelerate anymore, I need to back the idle and put more gas, but it only change two gears very slowly and at most 30 mph, I dont know what happened. The car is up-to-date maintanced and this noon when I unplug the power of MAFS, when I put more gas, there is no response, the engineer is just shacking overthere, there is no message regarding to this issue, can anybody tell is it because of the MAFS?

Thanks

I check it on ebay, its from $50-200 for a new one.
Which range should I choose?

Whoever the OEM supplier for the S80 is (for the S70, they are Bosch or Denso brand). This isn't a part you want to use a cheap, aftermarket brand for - they just don't work. I've split this off into the S80 section.

Check the intake plenum tube (big one) going into the bottom of the intake manifold, the one with the sensors in it. If it has come loose at intake manifold it will act exactly as you describe. Had this happen and it left me scratching my head until I happened upon it.
Our first 240 saved us twice we are a living testament to Volvo safety. The S80 T6 is "just because I could" and it's a fun drive!

You mean the sensor become loosen or the plenum tube?
Somebody told me it may because of the fuel pump or the fuel filter, I will try your suggestion first, thanks.
You have a great day.

I checked the sensor on the plenum tube, all should be fine.

On the other hand, I went to maintainance the other day, a guy adjusted the idle, it stays on 1500 rpm now rather than 600-700 previously. But it still does not work, it seems like no matter how you push the pedal, it just dont accelarate. It takes half a mile to reach to 30 mph, but that's it. I feel somewhere is blocked, like fuel filter. The fuel pump should be fine, coz if it is down, then the car wont start.

I think I need to find a chance to find a mechanic to take a look at it.

Are there anyway that I can check and exclude the possibility by myself?
Anybody can help?

I really appreciate it, I know there are many professions here. Thank you guys.

Well thats scary! What did he to to change the idle speed? I bet the tranny is loving that! Vibration usually points to a misfire. Is it still rough after the idle change? Pull the spark plugs and examine them, it might tell you something about whats going on in the cylinders.

Still no CEL? You could get the codes pulled anyway. Im assuming the CEL lights up before you start the engine?
