I have a 850 GLT 5spd. Car was driving just fine when i heard a little tick and thought it was just a stuck lifter so i added some seafoam. Well 50 miles later tick got bad down the highway and started knocking then a scraping sound then oil light started to faintly flash (plenty of oil in it) so i pulled over and tried to find it with no demise. Started the car back up and limped to a gas station where she sits now till i get it towed. It will still start up but is noisy. I hope I didnt wreck anything to bad. I looked though things and found it not leaking oil on the ground but there is a noticable wetness of oil in back towards back of the motor by the exhaust manifold. Any Ideas? Spun bearing? If so Im going to put a motor in it since it will be cheaper then a machine shop.
`I love my Volvo and refuse to get rid of it (only for a turbo with a manual though) and will rebuild. Is there engine rebuild kits somewhere? Good used motors? I know its a plug and play motor and if i find a turbo motor can I mout my manual trans to it and how much work will it be to install one. Is there parts I would have to add? Please help

There's a parts seller called RM Euoropean . They sell Glyco brand main bearing sets and other bits for Volvos.

Does anyone have experience with this brand of bearing?

IF it is rod bearings then it is not so bad but main bearing failures so often also involve the bearing shell spinning in the bearing opening. Since the block is aluminum that is a huge problem and really not repairable. Can be fixed by a good machine shop but for a lot more money than a complete used engine will fetch.
How many miles on the car? Any oiling problems or any other thing that would be suspect in a lower end failure? Rods and mains aren't usually a problem. There is a rare failure where thrust flange of the #5 for 5's and #6 for 6's fails and crank has end play with growling and thumping noise but no heavy knocks. I haven't seen one of those in a few years and not heard of one past 94 model year.
Turbo engine will go in but do not use a dual mass flywheel. The flywheel from non-turbo is the same but you need a tougher clutch than the N/A version.
I have used Glyco brand bearing shells and they worked well. The clearances were correct and the engine ran with no noises and great oil pressure.

I have I think around 190xxx on the motor. Will all year 850's and V70 from 95-98 motors fit in there? I found a 96 v70 motor close with 98xxx on it for $600. If I did match mine with a turbo motor I would definataly redo the cluch I dont hear of too many Volvo turbos with manual trans. and if I have fun with my N/a 5 spd a turbo 5 spd would be a blast i could have a sleeper.
I just went and started it and it started still with a knocking noise. I wish I could record it and put it on here for u to listen. No oild leaking on the ground and its running up to the top cams. the knock seems like it is coming from #3 cylinder, could be a rod bearing but i didnt have a scope to really pin the noise.? I haven't experienced working on the lower parts or engine but I guess this will be a good learning experience.
I still havnt got the car home yet but when and if it gets warm ill dump the oil and check my magnetic plug to see if I got metal and possibly drop the oil pan. The high here is only in the single digits which maks it hard to work outside without a garage. I wish they had garages where you could rent time and there tools to work on ur cars like back in the day.

Im going to look and grab the crank and see if there is play. Possibly do a compress check I have noticed that it had a tick up by the lifters but i just put that as wear on the shims. I was going to reshim them this summer but now I just want to get it running
