'99 s70 AWD-new CPS still no start-at first!!

Post by DelM01 »

Okay, so after two trips to the parts store (they ordered wrong part) and $239 bucks, the engine still won't start, I've decided to start scratching the other side of my head (that way I'll have matching bald spots!) installed new cam sensor- now I'm thinking about the other two codes-1603 and 1602? from what I could gather, that involves the immobilizer ? This will be new unexplored territory for me and any assistance will be GREATLY appreciated...also to recap- have spark, when I pushed the Schrader valve there seemed to be lots of fuel pressure also I can hear the pump cycle when the key is turned on.
Okay-after walking away for a few hours and to let the battery charge, I came back and tried again-at first same as before, but noticed that it seemed to be firing on one or two cylinders then a few more then it started but quickly died. So I tried again and same thing but then it started and kept running, so reluctantly I turned off and re-started and it started like normal and was idling @950ish and I ran til warmed up , then I turned it off and re-started again and it started like normal-Could it be that the new CPS had to calibrate with ignition? I will let it cool down to completely cold and try again. I also put my code reader back on and only codes 1603 and 1602 came up, (gone are 0013 and 0422) these are new (or at least persistent) because I had the battery disconnected for the procedure. Thanks !-M

UPDATE..since no one was up to the challenge of my problem, I will update my query myself- the next day the engine started up normally and better yet the 'hunting' that it used to do after warm up is gone, might have been the brake cleaner sprayed in the air intake hose just before the ETM (I didn't have any starting fluid) so apparently, the new CPS had to calibrate itself with the ignition module. It starts and runs as good as new and today went through DEQ and passed with no problems

That will do it.
You need to be REAL careful what you spray and where
Sometimes when you clean a MAF to aggressively it can take a day or two until it sompletely dries out to fire and then it may be very rough, start and stop for a few times!
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP

It's a OEM Volvo part- came in a Volvo box says 'made in the Netherlands'- and the cost was $239 form a local import parts distributor that mostly specializes in VW and Subaru, they got it the next day-IPD couldn't get one for 5-7 days they said. But It runs as good or better than ever-gosh I hope it last! it has never idled so evenly, right @950 and doesn't even waiver at all- I'm very pleased and thankful for the advice-or at least encouragement- from this website and those who responded! :)
