Need to redo the parking brake on my 2004 s60
I just bought a 2004 2.4 s60, fwd. I need to replace the e-brake shoes as I have no e-brake right now. Should I also replace the rear pads at the same time? Any help would be appreciated....including instructions....this is my first volvo!

Have you tried adjusting the parking brake?
The adjustment is on the base of the handle under the boot. I think the boot plastic trim pops off upward on that one.
The adjustment is a 10mm long nut on the thread rod on end of cable. If it is all the way adjusted then it needs shoes so go ahead and loosen off the adjuster all the way in preparation for new shoe installation.
A recent post covered the shoe replacement on one of the late model FWD models and yours will be the same. It may also be in the repair database section. It could be called parking brake or emergency brake.

I just had to replace the rear rotor on my S60R because the ebrake pad came off the brake shoe and wedged between the drum and the other shoe which caused the brake to self destruct when the wheel locked up. It damaged the rotor so badly, it had to be replaced. I had them check the other wheel, and it also had a pad that was off the shoe. Like many brakes that have them riveted on, these are just glued on. Looks like a common part defect on Volvos, since I see the same failure on other models. It is just a matter of time.

I am waiting on disks to do my rears, parking break shoes and springs. I have also purchased two star wheel adjusters (about $30 US) which I am going to retro fit in place of the 'H' shape bar . Once in place, the shoes can be adjusted with a a screwdriver blade via one of the wheel bolt holes.
