I replaced my pump last summer (which was the second time on the car) and from what I saw, the VW pump was darn-near the same price as the Volvo - my guess was that someone figured out they could make a lot more cake off of the VW's by making the same part the same price!

Just do the delete..I have done it. NO codes, Passed emissions.. both OBDII and tailpipe test. eliminates 100s of dollars worth of pointless parts and never ending DTCs..Takes @ 5 minutes.

I found the air pump check valve for 59.99 at partsgeek.com, it's after market but it's new and I'm ordering that to go with the air pump relay that I already have. I finally put my 850 on the road today since I can finally afford to have 3 vehicles insured/registered...can't wait!!!

I've been reading through the paperwork I got on the 96 850 we just bought, and the diagnostic report came up with this same error code. Of course, this was in 2008, so I have no idea if this issue has been resolved. We're taking the car to be inspected tomorrow, so does anyone know how much this repair could run if it hasn't? I know there are a few variables as it could be the motor, check valve, etc, but a price range from least it might cost to most would be really helpful.

$700-800 at dealer prices if the whole system is to be replaced (mine has been once under my ownership and several times before). Stupid expensive - the bypass is the way to go.

And the bypass doesn't show up when they do an inspection in VA?

As long as the check engine light stays off, yes, it should pass.

If your pump is still running (I can usually hear mine on cold days), replace the relay and/or SAS valve and you may still have a working system.

Is there an easy way to tell if the work has already been done? I don't have a check engine light on or anything. I only found the code mentioned on an old diagnostic report from 2008 that was in the car. Just trying to figure out what if anything I need to do before getting an inspection. Thanks for all the help

Yours went out about the same time mine did, then. That is one of those codes that persistently comes back - so if the light has been off for a few hundred miles it was probably fixed and you should be good to go.

That said, make sure the check engine light lights up when you first flip on the key. I have seen some removed from cars up for sale.
