240 GLE Head Lights

Post by Keith h »

Hi there,
wondering if anyone can help me, i have an 240 GLE estate (1984).
I am having trouble with my head lights & side lights, basically they do not work.
The side lights that usually come on automatically are not & when i turn the switch for the head lights they are not working either. I have checked the fuses and it is not them.
Also i am able to flash my head lights.
I think it is probably a connection or something, but as i am not very good with cars i could do with some advice.
If anyone has any suggestions i would be very grateful. :D
Cheers, keith

First and always with any electrical problem check your grounds. To save money manufactures send the voltage out to the device and then the return path is through the body of the car. Steel is not as good a conductor as copper so many times cleaning the grounds will restore proper operation. Now in your particular case you can flash the lights which would seem to imply you might have a bad switch or relay. Basically get the wiring diagram and a volt ohm meter and you follow the path of voltage using the wiring diagram. I am guessing but each side of fuze has 12v, switch 12v in and out, relay 12v operates then 12v out to lights and to ground. It can be confusing but if you can get a handle on checking electrical stuff you will always be in demand.

Thanks very much for your help with my querie with my lights.
The problem was that some of the wires had broken away from the connector on the switch.
The problem i have now is that i have 3 loose wires & 2 connection points(the wires are red/white, blue/white. and red) & i am having trouble finding which go where. i have got the lights working but they seem to stay on all the time when the car is going or the side lights only work when the switch is on.
It is just really frustrating, if you could give me some advice i would be very grateful.
Cheers :(

If you can find a friend with a similar volvo look at how his is hooked up. Or even look at one in a junk yard. It sounds like you have the side lights hooked up where the headlights normally go.
