Volvo Repair Database Squeaking glovebox

Post by Mbnorris »

Hey y'all I'm new to the site. I was reading about issues with a squeaking glovebox. A friend of mine bought a 2000 S80 T6, which my brother owns now, and his glove box squeaked something awful. After tightening all the screws and the normal stuff I finally figured out what it was. Inside on the left where the plunger that turns the light inside the glovebox off and on when opening and closing it rubs against the plastic molded part on the top where it touches it when closed causing it to squeak. So I located the exact point of contact and put a piece of electrical tape on the plastic molded part so the plunger rests on it so that it's between the plunger and the plastic molded part. It has not squeaked again. I hope this will help to those that have not solved the case of the squeaking glovebox.
I want it due to the shear inability to continue life without it!!

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

Thank you for this information. I detest anything squeaking in my car and I am sure this will be of help to S80 owners.

I am putting it in the Repair Database for future reference.

My squeeking glovebox was due to the bracket that clips my glovebox closed. I greased it a little and it hasn't squeeked since. The electrical tape just might not be allowing the glovebox to move around at all therefor there's no movement on that bracket. Just posting this because if you get tired of seeing the tape, you might could try greasing that bracket and the glovebox action.

I have a sqeaking sound from my glovebox too, it only happens now and then so I don't worry to much about it though. Funny though, once I was driving in the summer time and the window was rolled down and the glovebox was sqeaking, my friend didn't know the noise was from inside the car and said "gee, the crickets sure are loud tonight".

My glovebox is squeaking really bad!! I'm going to fix it today, I will post results.

I used a 2 inch piece of electrical tape on the metal strike plate for the glovebox light switch. squeak gone!! I tried to take pictures of my handy work, but they were too dark. My glovebox light is on the left side of the glove box, and has a push botton switch on the back side, so I looked back and found where it was striking the metal plate and stuck that electrical tape on there, took it for a test drive and no more squeak!!

Wow, I had no idea this was a common problem with s80's until I stumbled upon this site. Mine has been squeaking for a while now, my friend loved making fun of me- saying i must be going fishing because i have crickets in my glovebox. Thanks for the helpful advice.

After awhile, you'll notice the electrical tape will probably make sounds, the "true" fix for this is called felt tape.
It works wonders on squeaky annoying old dashes.
