could be a bad MAF sensor, you can try taking the maf out and get some maf cleaner at any auto parts store and clean it and if it runs better then you know where the problem is.

Yeah well its been running good all day, i cleaned the MAF anyways and Seafoamed it

I actually had the EXACT same problem in my '97 T5, and here's a couple things to think about:

the first symptom I noticed was the turbo was sluggish off the line. almost no power at all to the point that I had problems crossing 2 lanes of traffic to make a left turn. it took me a bit to realize I was getting awful gas mileage (around 10 mpg city) because the car seemed to do fine on the highway and it kept the average right around 20 mpg combined.

I actually found that I had a pretty significant vacuum leak coming off of one of the turbo lines. after replacing the hose with some generic fuel line I bought at autozone, my gas mileage as increased to about 19 MPG around town and my care is MUCH more responsive. however, I've noticed that my MPG while the car is in open loop is still awful (around 9-10MPG. I think I just need to reset the ECU.

Also, at one point I pulled the codes off my car and found that I had a p0133 (bad upper o2) code but it wasn't significant enough to throw a CEL. I cleared the code and it didn't return.

It's still a good idea to replace the o2. I would have this winter but I don't have a garage to work in and it's freezing cold in Idaho so it will have to wait until summer. If you haven't checked any of your vacuum hoses, I would certainly give it a shot. when I first tried to find the leak I tried the "blast all vacuum hoses with carb cleaner until the engine idle changes" method.. and it didn't work for me at all. you have to get a pretty significant amount of carb cleaner into your intake before the idle will change at all.

Well i put the new o2 Sensor in and Changed out all the lines From the waste-gate, compressor to the TCV valve, the one on the bottom of the compressor was a major Pain in the @#$! it boosts a little better while cruising, but its so slow off the line! i can floor it and its slow till like 20 then it starts to pick up then boosts and goes.. its really annoying that i cant ummm "compare" cars with others from a stop because i will lose badly....

Shorten your wastegate rod by turning it clockwise into the actuator. Start with 1 to 1 1/2 turns, it does make a big improvement. If you want more, then do more afterwards, but don't go straight to 2 turns. Every car will react differently to this; mine is no jackrabbit, but I've got it set to where I've got a decent amount of pep from a stop without screeching tires.

Thanks jablackburn, I will do that when its not raining, Here In the Portland area, its mostly stop and go, rarely do you get a nice open stretch of hwy, but even on the hwy it seems slow to me now... but i will try it and report back
