Air Pump

Post by turbotim2 »

So this weekend the air pump in my wife's 96 850 GLT Wagon decided to turn on and run all night friday night (with intermitant stops for 10 minutes or so). I unplugged the pump from the relay which is mounted next to the pump and is accessible from the bottom of the car after removing the shield. I charged the battery and test drove the car with no problems. Anyone experience this before?

We took ours in for the 100K mile service and the dealer told us that the air pump was out but it wasn't that important. Does anyone know what it does? It blows into the air box from under the battery.

It also blows air into the exhaust for emission control. I was told that the relay was bad on mine. I just unplugged the whole thing and haven't had any problems. The pumps are rediculously priced for a little electric motor that doesn't even last 100k miles. I am going to leave it unplugged and see if anything happens.
