I went to Mobil.com to see what they recommended for my Volvo and for my wife's '01 E320. I was hoping I could start buying the same stuff for both cars in bulk.
When I put in the details for my '96 850R, I was surprised to see the following recommendation for "Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40". Changing the vehicle type to an "850 Turbo" instead of "850 R" gives me what I'd expected "Mobil 1 10W-30".
Would "Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40" be the ultimate oil for my '96 R, or is Mobil one just bonkers?
Also, the wife's E320 takes Mobil 1 0W-40. Is it safe to run that through the 850R? I'd think not as the cold viscosity is far too low, but here's asking!

I think the 0-40 would be great...bit on the expensive side but there's no reason to be afraid of the low temp viscosity.
I can't think of a reason why the TDT would be recommended for your R, except that its a heavier duty oil so I suppose they feel that maybe you're running that thing hard on the track or something? It would be a great oil too, but I say stick with the 0-40 for both your Volvo and Merc.

That would be great as the 0w40 has the A3 and B3 specs that I've heard are really good for the turbo. I read that somewhere here, and there's a check-box matrix at - http://www.autozone.com/autozone/exxon/ ... 0214_bz_3a - showing that the 0w-40 and 10w-30 High Mileage have the B3 rating. No mention of the A3, though.

I run 0w-40 with great results. You don't have to worry about it being too thin - the 40 part takes care of that.

I did end up with Mobil 1 10w30 High Mileage. It was $25 for a 5+ qt jug at Wally World and they didn't have the 0w40, so I picked up two. I'd like to run through two or three changes with that. I'm just after a complete head rebuild with a bunch of new parts (PCV, too, of course) all around and I'm seeing some oil consumption. I'd love it if the 10w30 High Mileage reduces that.

I hope you didn't use HM for your w210, which could cause FSS (oil viscosity sensor) problems due to the "seal conditioning agent" they put into the synthetic HM oil.ojdorson wrote:I did end up with Mobil 1 10w30 High Mileage. No, that went in the '95 850R.
I couldn't find the Mobil 1 0w40 for the w210, so I got Rotella 5w40 synthetic which should do it well. I've also been scouring BobIsTheOilGuy.com. I'm using this change for a seafoam treatment, so I'll be draining this stuff in 2-3k miles and by then I'll have ordered some of the "good stuff" Mobil 1 0w40.
Unless I find the 0w40 for a really good price, I'll probably only use it in the Mercedes and keep giving the 850R the 10w30 High Mileage. Sometimes, the 0w40 goes on sale, and when it does I'll stock up.

Personally, I'm a big fan of Amsoil's synthetic but don't want use in the old cars. I've been using 5w30 Mobil EP for my w163, which has the same 3.2 V6 as your w210, for 3 years now and it's been great.
