Usually not a good sign - I would start by changing the transmission fluid.

Just had a car with the same issue, the tranny was totally shot internally.
Evntually the shifting issue will travel to the forward gears

After just replacing the alternator and catalytic convertor to the tune of $2000 and lots of work such as PCV breather box, front struts and much more is it worth replacing the transmission when I can't do this type of work myself? I am in a quandry.

Erie
Used tranny w/guarantee between $600-$800
You should be able to find someone to install it for $800
Unfortunately this is your best proposition.
You may as well go this route if you like your car, otherwise you will have wasted all that money you just spent
