v40 t4 trip computer

Post by hhhugues »

Is anyone else finding the all digital trip computer / fuel gauge on early v40's to be really off the mark ? While my car is a t4 and therefore not exactly frugal, it seems that it goes from saying 50 miles (when the light starts flashing) to 0 in about 10 miles. And i don't drive it hard. Then, i usually seem to be able to do at least 30 miles on "FUEL" flashing without any problems. I'm sure i've pushed it further than that and have never ran it out of petrol yet. Is it normal ? If so these systems are pretty shoddy really, not what i would expect on a volvo !

Also, has anyone got any tips on how to improve the economy on a t4 ? i get 30ish mpg on a run and struggle to get it past 28-29 on my weekly commute to work. With petrol prices being what they are, it's starting to hurt !

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

If you do a search through this forum you will find that there are many queries about the fuel tanks on the S/V40. The most asked is about the capacity of the tank. The manual says 16 gallons and that is what it is, but owners are seeing a fuel gauge on nearly empty and can't get more than 9 or 10 gallons in. The latest query on this is here. The reply from jimmy57 is the best explanation of this problem given his experience working for Volvo Cars US.

It is something you have to live with.

thanks a lot for that, it does seem to make sense... the thing is, i almost never fill the tank, so it's hard to really assess whether the mileage i'm getting and the mpg reading from the computer add up, but i shall fill her up next time and try running further on empty to see whether i experience similar results to the other people on here. It's annoying but not the end of the world as i can get more miles out of however much i put in...
