1998 V70 T5: Where is the EVAP Canister?

Post by nicad2 »

I just bought my first Volvo and it already has a problem :o

Can any of you V70 T5 owners point me to the EVAP canister on your cars? I have tried to locate it using a Chilton's manual, but the photos and descriptions do not match the 1998 V70 T5. I am currently chasing a check engine message number P0455. It appears to be a "large" leak in the EVAP system.

If someone could post a photo of the canister in the car, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks!

If I'm not mistaken, I believe (believe) that it's located above the wheel liner in the front passenger side fender - was the car involved in a front end collision? Known others who've had this problem after a 'fender bender'

The evap canister itself is not a problem spot. Since the code indicates a gross leak, I would suspect that either the gas cap is not sealing tightly enough (not likely) or someone replaced the gas cap with an aftermarket, Non-Volvo one.

That is what I am thinking. I was a little worried that it was under the drivers side near the battery. I was worried since the battery had leaked and possibly damaged the equipment near it.

I'll check on the passenger side.

I am in the middle of testing the gas cap fix now. I cleared the code (removed power) and tightened the gas cap. No Check Engine Light for two days now. That said, I have since reviewed the previous owner's repairs. He had the gas cap replaced three times! Every time he went to the dealer, the receipt says "P0455 code, replaced gas cap". Perhaps the system is incorrectly detecting this failure?
