O2 sensor replacement

Post by vooman »

On a 2002 S60 2.4 what 's the procedure for replacing the rear O2 sensor? Please be gentle - I don't even know where it is.

Thanks!

Why do you think you need a rear 02 sensor?
The front is usually the one that goes bad
(and you need to have the car on a lift for the rear, can't see it or get to it from under the hood)

CEL was on - local shop said error code "442" which they say is the rear o2 sensor (another code was for a faulty gas cap). My cheap reader didn't return any code at all.

Is there any other way to check for go/no-go of the sensor(s)?

Thanks for the assist!

vooman- with the price of a dual-band O2 sensor, I would hold off on replacing that since there are lots of factors that can make an O2 sensor throw a code, namely the emissions system.

I am not sure of all the specifics of what to check, but I would trace the issue back to the engine and start checking with the cheapest thing first in the combustion process. How is the car idling if that O2 sensor has a code? Rough, missing?

P0442 is a code for the evaporative emissions system.

I would start by checking lines and elbows at the charcoal canister - look in front of your right rear wheel for the canister laying on its side.

It idles well, in fact it runs pretty smoothly at all times.

I'll check the canister and hose from the engine back.

Thanks all.
