These swede babes can "get nasty" at times if you are not familiar with them. Avoid the dealer at all cost, find a good indie shop that specializes in volvos.
Do invest in a good code reader. Look online for best prices, but you should be able to pick up a decent one for about $80 shipped to you. Best investment you'll make.

I'm going to say this...go to your Volvo Dealer and have them run a diagnostic on it. I have a 2004 S60 2.5T that was misbehaving and found that the auto parts stores can't truly tell the issue due to the propietary codes. They can read generic codes that give an idea, not the actual issue. Once you find out what the issue is, ask for the parts list and and go from there.
Or like was mentioned earlier, find a good independent shop that has the correct system to read the proprietary codes.
