Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

This code can be set by oxidation, oil or grease in the connectors. Other things to check for: exhaust system leaks, especially between the front and rear oxygen sensors and between the exhaust manifold and the front oxygen sensor and intake air leaks, no matter how small, can set this code.

Check your vacuum hoses. At this age, they're getting to the point where they've begun to crack and get brittle. Elbows are usually the first to go.

A can of carburetor cleaner will help you find any leaks if you notice a surge in RPM while idling.
