1995 Volvo 850 cranks,no start RESOLVED,Lawn mower syndrome

Post by volvoQs »

Car won't start. It does turn over, but doesn't try to start at all (no pops/exhaust noises).

Had hood open in rain showing it to someone, they got in it to start it, it ran for a few seconds and died. So may be related to that?

I have replaced the spark plugs.

The battery is new and charged.

I have sprayed starter fluid in the intake.

It still will not start.

Currently have intake breather removed and spark plugs removed to air it out in case it is flooded.

Very frustrated and at a loss. You guys always helped me keep my 740 Turbo going, please help me with this.

It could be any number of things.

Do you have spark if you put the spark plugs into the plug wires and lay them onto the head?

Do you have fuel pressure at the end of the fuel rail?

Did you recently start the car and then, after just a couple of seconds, turn it back off?

Do you have any codes from port A-2 or A-6?

Post back any information that you can determine and we can work from there.

I will try the spark plug spark test.

I do have fuel at the fuel rail.

My best guess, based on limited information, is that you have a bad crank position sensor. The sensor can go bad in a sudden death mode and it will post no error codes.

It is a Catch 22 thing, the cam position error code will not post until the engine is running but the engine will not run (no spark) if the cam position sensor is not working.

Check the repair database for cam or camshaft, I think we have some basic ohmmeter tests.

Beyond that you could have a coil problem and it won't post codes either.

Do has much testing as you can with what resources you have since the Cam Position Sensor is a very expensive part.

My guess is as same as Lee, its likely the CPS. My 95's CPS died in the raining April as well. Funny these CPSs don't like springs  .

It may be the ignition coil?

I have power below it (the red and blue wires), but no spark from coil wire.

How could I tell if it is this or the camshaft position sensor?

I also have this problem.

I have spark to the plugs, lay them on the head.
I have fuel pressure in the fuel rod.
Replaced spark plugs, air filter, distributor cap, spark plug leads.

I am assuming that because I have spark the cam position sensor is working.

The engine spins under starter motor, but doesn't catch and start. No codes for anything, it's clean.

It's got me puzzled.

Any help is good help,

Clinton

Sounds like the fuel injectors are not receiving the command to open. Crank it a few times and pull a plug to see if it's wet or dry.

Perhaps the fuel pressure regulator.
