Recently my 2002 volvo s60 (base model/engine) started awkwardly shifting during being stuck in traffic.
I would hit the gas at low speed in traffic and the engine would just rev - without moving. I took my foot off the gas, reapplied, and it was fine. 5 minutes later the transmission would shunt/bang as it shifted. This seems to only occur only really in traffic. It also shifts "hard" from park to drive - something it has always done. Seems to take maybe 3-4 seconds to make smooth transition from park to drive.
Transmission fluid was changed about 3 years ago (30k miles).
So, should I trade the car in?

If you don't want to install a new tranmission... yep, get rid of it.
Not only won't it get better, it will get worse and at some point you will have a 100% failure.
(Sorry)
Your tranny IS shot and needs to be replaced
You failed to mention your mileage

Probably 75% of 2001 transmissions have failed and maybe 55-60% of 2002s
(Same tranny minus some very nasty 2001 software).
(Again SEARCH)
They pretty much fixed the problem in 2003 and newer with an upgraded valvebody
Again sorry, you need a new or rebuilt transmission.
and don't buy used, most are junk by now
Volvo says lifetime fluid, this is total garbage which most of us now know that hard way.
If owners had changed their trans fluid every 30K miles, most now would still be OK, (Well, maybe not 01s if they did not upgrade software)
60K was too long in your case, the damage was done, plus the original 01-02 valvebody is "iffy" anyway
Toyota uses essentially the same tranny, but recommends every 30K miles for a drain and fill
