99 s80 t6 turbo upgrades

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

99 s80 t6 turbo upgrades

Post by ssteen30528 »

Hello I was just wondering if anyone could point me in a direction for upgrading the turbos on my 99 s80 t6. I dont want to go super crazy but I live in the mountains and would like to get more zip. So far the car is bone stock I have a list of goodies like plugs coils and suspension stuff from ipd ect. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks

The photo is a standard S80 T6 turbo as opposed to something larger, well VERY large.

Haven't found anything on the web about a modified S80T6 but the thread here from Turbobricks describes a Volvo 960 that used a S80T6 block mated to a 960 head with S80T6 valves, valvesprings etc.

http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=69171

Personally I would start with ECU upgrades first before trying to re-engineer the turbo setup (if there are any out there)

There isn't a lot of room on a S80 back there behind the exhaust but I bet you could squeeze a slightly larger pair of turbos in there if you took the car off the road for a while.

My 2c: Dont bother with the motor in a '99 S80 unless you've had uprated parts fitted to the "already on the ragged edge in stock form" transmission from these guys: http://www.tripleedgeperformance.com/

What do you mean by more zip? Throttle response? Torque from bottom end? More pull at the top end? Better partial throttle response?

Are you sure the car is optimal to begin with? Good compression and leakdown? Wastegate pressure is correct on the turbos (6.5PSI is stock IIRC, you could bump this up to 7.5 for a bit more initial response). Vacuum lines in good condition? Good TCV? CBV isnt leaking/oozing boost? I say this beacuse you might fine the peformance you want by just bringing it close to how it was on day one.

If you've done the above, then upgraded the transmisson & software and fitted an uprated TCV (IPD have a nice one) but still dont have the power you want I think my next move would I think I would probably try 2x TD04-18G's. Problem is you'll need a custom ECU tune as well as custom turbo plumbing, exhaust manfold and (maybe) a bigger intercooler. I would guess you might loose a lot of the bottom end torque that the T6 has in stock form however.

Thanks for the reply I will deffinetly check everything you mentioned above. The car has sat for a year before being revived my me literally pulled out of the weeds lol. I am in contact with triple edge about my failing transmission. There is a company on the internet I have spoken to them also www.transmissioncenter.net, I called them they can rebuild it and guarantee it to be good to 1000hp not that I will ever achive anyting near that. As far as more power Its ok just wondering if I can do much more then k&n and some new exhaust pipes for power gains. I am trying to get more bottom end and midrange pull. But deffinetly starting with transmission before doing anything to motor. After that I will probably purchase ipd software to tune computer

Hmm the T6 has a flat torque curve from 1800RPM up, it shold haul ass from the bottom end (at full throttle). For sure, check your compression and leakdown readings, check for boost\vac leaks, check the CBV isnt leaking boost too.

To set the wastegate actuators, spray a little WD40 on the threads for the adjuster, and loosen the locknut. Then disconnect the rod from the wastegate(s).
Next apply 6.75psi to the actuator line (metal pipe at the back of the motor, near the transmission dipstick. It should hold the pressure, if not, fix the leak before you go any further.
Go to one of the turbos, ensure the wastegate is closed fully by hand, then screw the end of the acuator rod until it drops perfectly onto the pin on the wastegate shaft. Its important to make sure the wastegate definately closed by hand and that the hole in the acutator rod drops right onto the pin with not movement of the rod or wastegate.

Hope this helps

I guess another thing you could try is port out the turbos and free up the exhaust, that would help some without having to go crazy with custom exhaust manifolds..
