I didn't oil the filter after taking it out of the box. Knowing that that has been a potential issue (one that K&N still denies, however), I even wiped my hand on it, but there didn't seem to be any excess of oil on it.
I've parked the car for the night, and I disconnected the battery. So it'll have all night to think about what it's done. I'll try driving it after reconnecting the battery, and if that doesn't help I'll put the stock filter back on and blast the MAF with some CRC MAF cleaner.

I went out this morning, and hooked her all back up. Started the car (it stumbled for a few seconds, normal after an ECU reset) before returning to normal idle. I drove it around town VERY gently to warm it up for a couple of freeway runs. The car was shifting beautifully.
I got on the freeway, and the transmission went into lockup in 4th, and STAYED THERE.
As a rule now, I'm going to reset that computer every time I do any major or electrical work on the car. I'm hoping this is the simple end to my little drama, but I'll keep you all posted if anything else develops.
Thank for all the comments!
EDIT: OH! I forgot! Since I did this, my the RPM don't do the strange little dipping thing when coming to a high-speed stop anymore. Weird coincidence?

Told you it was nothing big
It might come back once the car re-learns a bit; it must be something they all do.EDIT: OH! I forgot! Since I did this, my the RPM don't do the strange little dipping thing when coming to a high-speed stop anymore. Weird coincidence?

So I thought everything was good, then I remembered... I have a Volvo!
So it's back to its antics, but here is the info:
-After battery reset, works fine for about one drive.
-I'm on a long drive right now(friend is driving, don't worry!) and it does go into and stay in 4th gear, but it is definitley the lockup that is going wrong.
-After some lock-unlock-locking bouncing back and forth, it stops and just stays unlocked.
This is the critical info that I think might be helpful in solving this: When all this is happening, cruise control does not work. It will either turn on for less than 5 seconds before disengaging, or just will not engage at all.
It's gotta be something electrical... I just don't understand.
I still don't think it would be related to the new air filter, but I'll throw the airbox back in to doublecheck. I hope the cruise control issue is a good clue!
Thanks for the help everyone.

Hmmmm. Pull up with your toe on the brake pedal and set the cruise. Does it stay on?
I don't know if the 2000 model still has the brake switch with the vacuum line for the cruise control - but someone somewhere said that when you hit the brakes on the newer models, the transmission will unlock the torque converter to help slow you down a little.
Other than that, it's got to be something with the throttle...

I'll try the brake thing soon. I don't why the throttle would start being strange. I remember seeing the cruise control issue being indicative of a bad ETM, but I replaced mine with the XeMODeX unit. It's been fine for 13,000 miles.

I drove it around just now. Cruise control would not engage at all, under any conditions. Brake pedal doesn't sag at all, and I tried bopping it around. No change.
This is frustrating!

Any difference with the old air box installed? Do you still have your old ETM?

Old ETM had to be returned to XeMODeX, so I can't test that. I might call them up to see if they have any ideas. I think the cruise control failure is the biggest clue in all this. Does that pretty much only point to throttle?
I'm going to reinstall the airbox tomorrow morning to see if that does anything.
