So Volvo found us through state registration records for this recall. We made an appointment since like others here, if we filled our tank past the 10 on the fuel guage, we would smell gas vapor. So strange that we've had this gas smell and have avoided it by simply not filling the tank more than 8 gallons at a time.
Volvo dealer says they performed the recall, so I felt confident that I could again fill our tank full and not have any seepage or fuel vapor smell. At the gas station where I filled up, I also went to use the air machine. While checking the passenger-rear tire pressure I saw a little drip puddle and smelled gasoline. Looking under the car I could see that gas was seeping from a seam towards the middle across the tank, as well as from where the filler tube meets the tank body.
So my question for you folks is, how could Volvo NOT see this and not replace our fuel tank? This is a serious flaw, even if my car is 14yrs old.
I will call the service center and ask them to explain what exactly they did with the recall service and ask them to look at the tank since it is clearly leaking and showing seepage now that it's filled up again.
Should they simply drop the tank and replace it? The recall notice speaks of this as an option for tanks that have cracked or show leaks/seepage.

davvver, I havent recieved any recall yet and i have 2 850s registered in T.O. it could be possible we arent effected but id call a dealer to make sure, do you have a dealer near Timmins? Im not in T.O at the moment and wont be for a while so if you find out i'd like to know, I used to deal with Robert Motors on Dundas.
June 3 Update: Out of curiosity or paranioa i took a look at my 850s tank to find it dry. the heat shield and mounts/ tank / straps and isolaters/protector plate at rear are in excellent shape, the only minor thing i found was that the heat shield was just touching the body frame and this could put undue pressure on the mounts when the tank expands and contracts so i bent it slightly away, I havent recieved a recall for my sedan or wagon but it may only effect certain Vin #s, Although Anybody not sure should contact a dealer, I will anyway when i get the chance.

Yes, you should. I go to the dealer everytime I have issues (I don't go there for oil changes) and a few months ago the car failed the smog test and I had no ideas why (the car passed the emission part but failed the FUNCTIONAL part, the guy at the smog station told me there was fuel odor present). I had such a headache looking to buy a new car...fortunately I brought the car in for the dashlight switch replaced + A/C service, after that the fuel odor was gone. I thought I got luck out passing the smog test later but now I realized they fixed it without telling me. No I didn't get anything from the mail and of course they have my address, I am their client.

maybe. I thought I smelled gas last night after I filled up but I looked under the car and everything was dry, so I don't know if it's worth the hassle. I'd have to drive in Kansas City which is not something I enjoy...

Should I wait for a letter or just take mine in and ask about this? I do smell fuel once in a while but nothing over powering. How many other notices are out there for the '93 - '97 850's? By the way I bought mine used about a year ago, a couple "minor" issues but a good car after fixing those.

The dealer just replaced the heat shield so my fuel leak wasn't addressed.
