Tailgate Strut Replacement problem

Post by JBC »

Hey guys,

It is late and I'm tyring to replace my tailgate struts. I have Stabilus Lift-O-Mat units from IPD. They are metal ball sockets without a retaining clip. I can't seem to get the old ones off. They do not have a clip. Any suggestions? Tried to search a thread with pics or explanation of my problem without luck.

Thanks
JBC

when I replaced the ones on my 98 v70xc they had the clips. when I got the clips off I had to use a prop rod to get all the weight off the supports so the ends would come off the balls.

I finally got them off. I had to remove the forward ball joint first and the pry off the rear joint of the strut or shock. It was easier to get the forward ball joint off and the the rear came off relatively easy. Again, as always, make sure the hatch is propped up because it will simply fall. I had my feet holding up the hatch when I popped off the forward ball and it fell - gravity works. Anyway, not have the retainer clips requires a bit more effort to remove the rear ball sockett. Hatch works great, again.
