More horsepower

How to go faster, stop quicker, and turn harder. Chips, exhaust, larger turbos, bigger/slotted/drilled rotors, high performance brake pads, manual boost controllers, performance shocks/struts/springs, airbox mods and more! Also discussion on HID and Xenon lights, aftermarket foglights and other exterior lighting.

More horsepower

Post by dbeckwith »

I have a 95 850 GLT NA. Back in the sixties I had quite an infamous relationship with local law officials because of my propensity for street racing. I used to run a 65 GTO with a 389 punched, crane, edelbrock, hooker, holley, accel, etc. It was a formidable machine. Now I am an old man and have developed an affinity for this Volvo  Question is how can I get some horsepower and torque out of this thing without hindering driveability too much and/or cause unnecessary damage to electronic monitoring  ?

Not much you can do to an NA motor.

You can upgrade the intake system a small bit to draw in more cold air.

See this link for more info on what cheap things can be done to an NA:

A learning experience is one of those things that says, "You know that thing you just did? Don't do that."

The N/A has limited resources for increased power. Many have asked the same question and without grinding your own cam you are looking at 5-10% increase at best (over the range -not just peak).

Best solution is to graduate to a high power turbo. It is cheaper and easier to buy a second car . A turbo motor, trans, computer, electronics and dash swap can be done If you are skilled in all of those areas. I use my N/A as a parts getter and loaner car to friends. It has a hitch and is great for gas mileage. Meanwhile my high pressure turbo awaits in the garage for my urge to move quickly.

Keep in mind sight and response times diminish with age. Make sure you have good lights and great brakes. Do not use crazy super bright lights as it attracts the local police. (One of the highest reasons impaired drivers are pulled over is for driving with high beams on - LEO's look for bright lights). I understand that the yellow wavelength (normal bulbs)are supposed to help with definition and clarity. I know very little in this area so maybe someone else will chime in and explain.
