2005 S40 High Engine Temp
2005 S40 High Engine Temp
Got a code High Engine Temp, see manual thhis morning. Idle was rough and engine stalled prior to message appearing. The temperature gauge was dead center, so no indication engine was hot. Any ideas?

Open your hood, run the car until normal temp (if you haven't done so), turn on AC full blast for about 2 minutes. Shut car off, look for any signs of leaks, specifically from the thermostat and theremostat housing, as well as hoses (top/bottom). If you see a leak from the the Temp Sensor unit underneath the theremostat, thats it. But to replace that sensor, go ahead and replace the thermostat w/new gasket. You going to have the drain your coolant as well. might as well replace with new coolant. Oh, make sure your fan is blowing too while the car and AC is running. As you can see, there could be more than one solution to fix one problem. Hope that helps.

The 2005 S40 has an engine with thermostat and ECT sensor down on the block buried below air cleaner box/ECM housing. This version of the 5 cylinder is reverse coolant flow cooling system engine.
Assuring the coolant level is full and doing the checks suggested is very valid but could require some dis-assembly to perform.
You say you got a code, do you mean just a message center message or were codes readout from car? IF so what is the code?
