02 sensor problem

Post by philski3 »

I have an 89 240 dl wagon. I just had to change the cat converter and was able to get the 02 sensor out w/o destrying it. I priced a new sensor $115. Is it possible to splice a new sensor onto the wiring harness w/o buying new wires. I bought a bosch for $12 for my mitsubishi, cut the wires and spiced the new one in and it has worked fine. Can I do this with the volvo. Pls assist with details. I want to make sure I hook the wires up right. There are 2 white wires and 1 black. Thanks Phil

There are some things you should be aware of.
The ECU is calibrated for a specific O2 sensor range, although similar, every manufacturer has slightly diferent O2 outputs depending on oxygen content in the exhaust. Although you could use a different sensor a variance in the output may provide the ECU with inaccurate data and a mixture that is not ideal could be the result.

Secondly most O2 sensor wires use a shielded cable to prevent any inductive voltage from providing a faulse signal, cutting a shielded cable could comprimise it's protective ability.

Finally to answer your question, the white wires are power and ground for the O2 sensor heating element, the black with is the ECU feed from the O2 sensor
