Options for seized engine

Post by davis911s »

Well it happened. My engine is seized. I am wondering about what I should do.

Firstly the car is a 98 Volvo V70 Wagon, Leather interior, Turbo, AWD with 5 spd :D

What should I do???
1- Haven't been able to find a used engine in my area
2- I have the skills and friends that I THINK I could do a basic rebuild. But parts harder to find in ALberta Canada
3- swap in a Ford V8, cheap power but I would lose the AWD
4- Sell car as is
5- part it out

I have a few other "project cars" (77 Porsche 911, 73 VW Baywindow bus) so my wife is not thrilled with the idea of another project car.

What do you guys think
What is approx cot of parts for a rebuild?

Thanks

You can buy a deent used engine from 500 to $700 here in the states
No, you cannot do a Ford conversion, that was for the old RWD cars, it won't work here
Don't think it's ever been done

What caused the seizure? The type of damage will dictate the type of repair needed.

The 2 most common types of seizures are crankshaft and/or piston seizure. If it is the crank you can probably salvage the engine with a line bore (machine shop). If a piston siezed in the bore it is probably scrap. Mostly likely if a piston seized then the connecting rod is usually broken and the damages to the block (and head/valves) are usually fatal.

Often when the pistio/.conn rod goes it (or they) take the crank with it. If it was only the crank seizing it's usually oil starvation, not good for other rotating parts (camshafts). Everything needs to be checked and flushed so you get all the metal pieces out of the lube system.

If it's locked because you lost the timing belt and bent some valves, you may just be looking at a head R&R.

Thanks everyone. I will keep looking for a decent used engine, but in meantime I will try to see what happened here. I am
going to assume right off that it is oil starvation. I had an oil light problem and fixed the PVC system. As soon as I fixed that I had a huge white smoke issue. I was taking the car for a test drive
after redoing the PVC so I assume it is oil

timing belt and tensioner are only a
few months old and very low miles on them.

I will update when I know wha the problem was

is there an "easy" way to tell if it is piston seized or crankshaft?

You might try Strandberg's used auto parts i Wisconsin: http://www.strandbergauto.com/volvo.html
They specialize in Volvo's and would probably know if you could swap in a different Volvo engine.

I am in western Canada so Wisconsin is out of the picture lol

What abot if I were to install a running NON TURBO ? Would it still bolt right in? I know I would lose HP but for short term is that an option?
