transmission swap

Post by jtkiii »

i need to replace my transmission. i've found a trans for a non-turbo at a good price. mine is a turbo. i understand bell-housing is different? is bell-housing on these tranny's exchangable? or do i have to find a transmission for a turbo, like mine?

thanks in advance.

no difference in bell housing. The torque converter will fit but its stall speed is higher due to higher RPM at which NA engines torque curve ramps up. I really can't say how much difference it will make. It might even make the initial take off more spirited.
I thought a bit more and the final drive ratios may be different and that will be a deal killer.
What engine code is your car? it is the 6th and 7th digits of the VIN.
NA trans is 2.44:1 but some 2.4T are 2.27:1 and others are 2.44:1

thanks jimmy -- i'm only familiar with old gm muscle car torque converters -- does it not bolt to the flywheel and is independent of the transmission? in other words, would i not keep my torque converter and just replace the transmission??

mine is a 2002 2.4t s60. i want to use a trans from a 2003 s60 non-turbo.

thanks.

jt

I edited my reply go look again.
Also, the torque converter clutch wears and if the replacement box has lower miles it would be better to use the newest TC.
The TC's will interchange with no fit problem at all. What failure did your old trans have?
If the trans burnt up and lost clutch lining material into fluid then you MUST NOT re-use the old TC.

i bought car at 92k. shifted very nicely. smooth and no clunks, unlike my wife's 2 v70's (2001's). at 122k it started a rough acceleration in 2nd -- trans, not motor. it would smooth out though, and i don't drive it hard. then, 124k, coming around a curve, my rpm's shot up and trans warning lights on -- was slipping. made it the 5mi home, but i drove slowly. slipped all the way. when my case of mobil 3309 came in, i drained the 4 quarts, filled with 4 new, and flushed with remaining 8, 2qu at a time. now fluid is redder, but doesn't exactly look new. as i said in another post, now it drives like a dream for first 5 mins, then slips again. still drives, but slips.

(where did my previous replies go? engine code 58)

thanks so much jimmy for your advice.

You are in luck, the B5244T3, Code 58 engine uses the same final drive of 2.44:1.

well that's good, i think. i just went out in it this evening. it pulls very strongly, shifts smoothly, for about 5-7 minutes. then slipping for sure in gears 1-3. i just have trouble understanding how it could run so well -- strong pulling, no slipping -- and still need major work. i'm wanting it to be easy!

so, let's assume i buy this new trans. it looks like you take the axle out, move an asundry of wires and hoses, and it should unbolt from the motor and come out the bottom. no subframe removal, no taking out the motor also. am i dreaming?

thanks again for your help.
