1997 Volvo 850
205k miles
California, USA
Code reads that air/smog pump is faulty.
Car is due for Smog cert.
Wondering, if I simply disconnect the air pump wiring at the pump, will it pass smog or will it still throw the code and fail smog test?
Thank you in advance.

If you disconnect the air pump that will throw a code in itself. So that won't work.
You can do the "SAS delete" procedure or send me PM, I have 2 working air pumps for sale (1 has 190k miles of usage, 1 has 10k). But I do not know the code your car is showing, and if for sure the air pump is the problem.

Two big problems with this setup is the pump itself and its relay. The pump can actualy fill with water and cause rust/damage, then it burns itself out.
It should only run on cold days when you first start it, just to heat the cat faster. If you hear it running beyond that, it's probably the relay.

Here's the code
PO410
Secondary Air Injection System Fault
The Air Injection System is monitored for fault
Probable cause
BB1. - Circuit Relay defective or fuse open
BB2. - Check connector or wiring
BB3. - Air pump defective or hoses blocked

Yeah, not many codes to pinpoint the problem with the SAS - pretty much just means that something is FUBAR. It's pretty easy to replace the parts yourself if you choose not to do the SAS Delete option.
If you wind up replacing the pump, make sure you get the three rubber mounts that support it. Mine fell apart during the removal and I had to wait a few days for the shipment.

Do you know if this VS post is the one I follow for my 97 850? I mean, the diode, the terminals and everything are exact?

I believe so - the '97 & '98 are pretty much the same car under the cosmetic changes.

Do you know how I get a hold of the schematic for the ECu for a 1997 Volvo 850? Just want to make sure i use the correct pins to attach the diode to.
To clarify:
To do the diode modification
1) The ECU is under the battery?
To replace the pump itself
2) The actual pump is located on the lower left side of the engine/compartment?

on a -96 and -97 850 the pump is not just running for two minutes after a cold start, it also runs a few seconds "next time you slow down to almost stop, but only if about 10 minutes has past since starting". The oxygen sensor detects this extra air and the car now knows that the pump works and does NOT throw codes.
Any one know if the SAS delete works on these later models?

This is definitely the post for your car. I did the method of tapping into the wires, not the soldering method. Took like 20 minutes but I am slow and very careful. Go for it! You will very likely get rid of the p0410 with the SAS delete procedure.apache31 wrote:Do you know if this VS post is the one I follow for my 97 850?
