PNP, or worse?

Post by chrisfromthelc »

The other day, my 850 GLT beign experiencing some transmission issue. Up util this point, I've noticed no problems with the transmission. I was driving along around 30 mph (residential area) and gave it a bit of gas to pass a vehicle, when it acted like it would not kick down into a lower gear. It all of the sudden seemed to be stuck in 3rd.

I pulled into my destination, and discovered that it's still stuck in 3rd, and I have no reverse. I pulled the PNP switch, disassembled, and tried to clean, but I still have the same results. When I pull the shifter from Park to Reverse, it does not seem to shift, and doesn't seem to engage any gear except third. I do have a new PNP switch on the way, and will replace that, but I'm wondering if there might be other issues.

Like I said, it never gave any indication that anything was wrong before, it just all of the sudden happened.

How long has it been since the transmission has been serviced? It could be the PNP but it also could be something more serious. A trans flush may clear it up...

Good Luck,

T2,

The original owner kept very detailed servie records, and had all service done by Momentum Volvo in Houston (reputed to be one of the best Euro car dealers in this part of the country). The second owner, I am not sure. I planned on changing the tran fluid when I put the PNP switch on, as it looks brown. Hopefully that will clear it up!

Even the best dealers that I've seen recommend AGAINST ever flushing the transmission, claiming it's a "closed" system. We owners know better and flush our tranny's to keep them from dying.

Sounds a lot like the typical PNP switch to me.

On another note, I see you're in Houston. Perhaps you'd be interested in coming out for the Texas Meet next month. Let me know if you're interested and I'll put you on "the list" .

THanks for the offer. I'll try to let you know, that is, assuming I am still here then. I may be moving to Nashville very quickly (job offer), so I may not even be here!

Now, if the damn USPS would deliver my part.....

(I live in Lake Charles, LA, about 2 hours east of Houston)

SO I finally got the part and changed the PNP switch. No change, except that if I rev vehicle quite high, it throws it into reverse for a second. I haven't changed the fluid yet. When I shift from Park to Reverse, it seems to trying to shift, but doesn't actually fully engage unless I rev it quite high.

Ideas?
