S70 ('98) GLT Cam Lifters Out of Order
I'm working on replacing the head gasket (1st time). I did not keep the cam lifters in order. Please advise. Thanks.

Welcome to MVS,
Keeping them in order is always the best method but many have swapped old lifters into a re-furbished head. Be sure to soak them in oil for at least 24 hours before putting them back in. If you can match any wear patterns so much the better.

Do not worry one bit. On these engines the pressure on lobes is very low. 4 valve motors have much lower spring pressure due to smaller valves and the lobe width and large tappet surface produce virtually zero wear. The only tappet wear I have ever seen was on an engine that had water in the oil and was run for a while that way so the tappets had rust pitting on the faces.
If your engine is tidy on the inside then you probably won't have any pattern wear on the tappets and they'll do fine. The precautions apply to 2 valve motors, especially V8's where the lobe width is small, spring pressure much higher, and the tappet face is 1/3 of what your tappets have.
