I've been troubleshooting a starting problem and I'm slowly knocking down the issues (most recent was the overnight battery drain was caused by the glove box light) but I still can't start.
This is on a 1995 non-turbo 850. The car tries to turn over but immediately drains the battery when trying to start. I took the starter out and had it tested and it still worked. I measured the voltage drop from the battery to starter and battery to alternator and the cables seem OK.
Today I noticed when I took the key out of the ignition it was REALLY hot (the key that is). This was after only being in about 10 seconds of cranking the engine. To me, heat means resistance of some sort which may explain the starting issue (but would that be enough to prevent starting?).
So... what can I test here and how?
Thanks again,
Neil
Key gets really hot

sounds like you're right - the key is now a part of a circuit. The ignition is a common problem. I'm guessing you have two options: wiggle it or replace it.

Is this what I'm looking for:

Is there a way to test it to make sure it's what needs to be replaced?

I suspect you may have more than one issue here.
You describe a failing battery. Have it load tested.
It can easily be done in the car.
And I agree that the key getting hot sounds like the
electrical portion of the ignition switch. For a car
that age, just change it. They wear out and it's easy.

Ok, I'm following up on this...
Replacing the ignition switch solved the hot key issue. I still have the no-start issue but I'll work on that in my other thread. I just wanted to put some closure on this so anyone searching for a "hot key" would see the switch replacement solved the problem.
