On my 2003 v40 the fuel filter is located on the driver's side, same side as the gas tank, just forward of the rear axle. There will be a plastic guard shielding the fuel filter. I recommend spending a few dollars more and purchasing a Bosch or Mann OEM replacement. Just make sure the part is OEM or you risk leaking fuel.
Below is a nice write-up on the process.

The tricky part is removing the filter. Either side has 'quick-release' connectors. The left side has a button that must be depressed to remove the line. The right connector will require a tool that can fit in between the nipple and the quick release. I used a small pair of scissors to push the connector away from the filter. Once you actually get underneath the car and see for yourself it will make sense.
*Use the rubber covers from the new filter to stop fuel from exiting the old filter.
*Have lots of towels handy.
*You can depressurize the fuel system prior to doing the job, which should reduce the amount of fuel that leaks. I did not and the leakage was minimal.

Yep zulu-v40 is right. The filter is just forward of the rear axle.
