Key spins in itnition

Help! My wife got stuck the other day with the kids becasue the key would not engage in the ignition. She said it would just spin freely in the tumbler on the column. After about 20 minutes of trying, the key finally worked. Has anyone else had a similar experience and if so, how did you fix it? Any help would be most appreciated. I just got a quote from the local dealer, and they want $450 to fix it by just randomly replacing the ignition!!!!!

This is one of the things that the mechanical part of the ignition switch does when it goes bad. IIRC, the part is less than $100. Everything else is labor b/c I'm pretty sure that you have to saw the old one out

Which car? If it's a '99 or newer, it has to be matched to the key too and may take a download. A royal pain, but part of the security on the car.
