Will used 2003+ auto tranny fit in 2001/2002?

I have read many posts on the 2001/2002 automatic tranny failures. Many seem to indicate that the problems were fixed for 2003+. By now there must be quite a few 2003+ cars in the junkyards. Will the 2003+ tranny fit in a 2001/2002? I am buying a 2002 XC70 w110k on it and will do the drain and fill w/Toyota ATF and the software (if it hasn't been done), but I want to be prepared for it's possible failure. Also, can the XC70 be converted to a standard shift? Thanks.

ps while looking for a car, I notice a lot of 2001/2002 XC70 with 150K+. Are these people just lucky or can some of these cars make it to 200K without catastrophic tranny failure?

2003+ trannies wont work, different electronics.
Only 2001/2002 are compatible, but buying a used one is taking a gamble.

There are many 2001s with 150k+ miles, but these trannies probably had the STOP NEUTRAL software turned off early in their lives and the owner has changed the tranny fluid regularly. That's the secret to keeping the 2001s trannies going strong.

Thanks for the info, but just one more query....is it possible to take the whole motor and tranny from a newer car and swap all of it or is it the electronics in the car itself that are not compatible?
